'One of the true things that can be said'

KNOWLEDGE + TASTE = MEANINGFUL JUDGMENT. Daniel Mendelsohn in ' A Critic's Manifesto' in the New Yorker's Page Turner blog discusses why everyone is not a critic. Also defends intelligent criticism. Reminded me of Elif Batuman's 'Why Criticism Maters,' published in the NYT a few years ago.

Can judgment of a book without systematic study of literature be meaningful? Is it possible to produce good writing/valuable judgment based on knowledge and personal narrative/ experience -- even if the thing produced is not criticism? Hm. Not sure yet.

(Title comes from Batuman's essay).
