Briefly

I've been thinking about friendship between artists or writers, personal and professional meaning, the cultural zeitgeist they may or may not capture. I mentioned this to someone the other night and they talked about famous literary friendships, mainly characterized by contest. Contest and also the permission (or shackles) a friend gives to another friend to be one kind of person.  I thought of "Just Kids," from Evan Hughes, published in New York Magazine, on the friendship between David Foster Wallace, Jonathan Franzen, Mary Karr, Jeffery Eugenides and others. Article, here.
